Roman Nogin – The Gallery of Eastern European Artists 2018

We can perceive in Nosan’s artwork, the folk life of Ukraine and their positive attitude towards life. His art seems to conceal under the surface of the canvas, an accordion and bandura performance of Ukrainian folk music, or a recording of the sing-songs of Ukrainian youths, or even the stories of the black soil the elderly impart under the cloak of night… Nosan’s artwork is naturalistic and tenderly amicable.

Introducing Roman Nogin        text by Metra Lin

Roman Nogin is a gentle, kind, quiet, and focused person. He told me that his aspiration dawned on him early on, having known since youth that he wanted to be a painter for life. Therefore, despite holding a teaching position at an art academy, he spends the majority of time painting in his studio by arranging to teach morning classes. He spends his days observing nature, listening to jazz music, and reading texts both historical and geographical.

There are various recurring topics in his art, such as the Jazz series that depicts jazz singers and their performances, or the The Disappearance of Cities collection that reflects on history and civilization. His Romance series, centered around women, is the most publicized in Asia.

Roman’s artwork is distinctly realist, characteristically decorated with rich, subjective colors. His use of a mixture of turpentine and oil, small strokes and blending treatments on the surface, and techniques such as pouring and branding allow him to create dynamic and intricate surface textures that add life to the simple postures of his figures. Roman’s colors are layered and vivacious, affecting strong visual sensations through contrasting colors. On the whole, his paintings, are romantic, playful, and convivial; the juxtaposition of planarity and depth in his paintings brings out a lasting and intense ornamenting effect. Many have said that his women series shares many stylistic similarities to Klimt’s art. Both are romantic artists that tend towards a form of aesthetic ornamentation. Personally, I find them to differ most significantly in the content of their paintings. Beneath their splendor, Klimt’s works are bedazzled with discussions of sensuality and love, evoking a particular emotional dimension, whereas Roman intends to depict the sensibility of the female body from an objective standpoint. He is intent on capturing the plurality of sentiments and characters of the female gender: his paintings enclose the lingering scent of perfume reminiscent of a  fanciful encounter with a beautiful woman.

His paintings’ rich and elaborate textures often bury complex symbol and metaphor. This is entirely consistent with Roman’s wish not to openly display the meanings he has conceived, for beneath his quiet disposition lies a playful and passionate nature.
